Paramount Pictures just snapped up a new trailer for its gauntlet of a videogame adaptation with its full trailer for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film, coming this November to theaters. Stuck doing whatever it takes, Sonic and his friend Tom will have to work together in order to prevent series antagonist Dr. Robotnik from taking over the world.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

While you’ll have to wait until November before the Sonic the Hedgehog movie comes out, don’t forget that another videogame adaptation, Detective Pikachu, will be released on May 10. Check out the trailer above, and stay tuned for more news here on Gaming Trend.

Honestly, the trailer has me puzzled. Ever since this movie was announced, people have questioned the need for it and it’s been sounding worse and worse each time we heard more details about it. The trailer to me confirms my fears as it looks even worse than I could have imagined.

Anyone remember the first Smurfs movie? No? Ok, well that’s my point. In that movie, you had the little blue guys crossing over into our world, the net effect being that it really didn’t resemble the property they were using. Yeah, sure they wanted to capture a new audience, but you would kind of want that audience to at least get some semblance of history within the property, ie have some of the movie be set in the land of the Smurfs, to give that audience more of a reason for watching. Otherwise, why bother?

And that’s the same kind of feeling I’m getting from watching this trailer. Things look so wildly different, the character doesn’t look good and in the end, I’m not even really sure what I’m watching. It presents a dichotomy between the sonic world that we know and the world that they want to present in this movie and it looks so off-kilter and out of place. Sonic gets placed in our modern world and… why? It looks more like he’s dropped in on the set of a Fast & Furious movie. Would have been so much better if they could have just made it a fully animated movie. Again, if they’re going to do it this way, why bother?
