Double Damage Games revealed today that Rebel Galaxy Outlaw will be out on the Epic Games Store August 13. Based on what we’ve seen so far, the trailer’s goofy, self-deprecating tone looks like a good indicator of what to expect in the game itself.
You’ll inhabit the role of Juno Markev, an outlaw and smuggler who went straight and settled down until events conspired to drag her back into the life. After an encounter in a shady watering hole goes bad, your ship is trashed, and you find yourself in debt to an old friend and casino owner who gives you a rustbucket and some words of advice. Packed with exciting combat, unique ships, and tons of great music, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw drops you into a retro future steeped in blue-collar Americana.
It’s refreshing to see a game where the goal is just to get by rather than saving the galaxy from the evil empire of the week. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw’s zero-G combat looks great, but developer Double Damage Games seems to be putting just as much care into building out the galaxy itself and the people — or at least aliens — who live there. The original Rebel Galaxy was an interesting game with a lot of charm even if it fell short in a lot of ways. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, a prequel to that game, looks like it’s equipped to amp up what made the original work while fixing a lot of its flaws.
We’ll see if it’s fit to fly when it’s released on PC on August 13. Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch ports are planned for the near future. If you want to learn more about the game in the meantime, the developer has posted a handful of videos of its YouTube channel showing off some of the game’s most interesting features, including its extremely in-depth ship-painting options.
